By Shahriar Kia Whilst some of Iran’s political observers presume the most recent anti-government protests spontaneous and decrease it to a level of a chaos due to the harsh economic conditions,  Shariar Kia,  the Iranian political analyst, has a deferent point of view. He wrote an op-ed in Alriyadh Daily and pointed to the important features of the Iranian uprising.

Economic woes, corruption, military spending, and intervention in neighboring countries were among the main reasons that triggered the  unrests in Iran in late December . Erupting shortly after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani introduced his government’s budget for the Persian New Year (starting in March), which  increased the military budget by 90 percent  while cutting subsidies on the poor, the protests quickly turned into a nationwide uprising that called for the overthrow of the ruling regime in its entirety.

As 2018 dawned in Iran, a surge of urban uprisings engulfed more than 140 cities and towns. Protesters  angrily chanted  “Leave Syria alone, think about us” and “Death to Hezbollah” — slogans aimed at not only the regime’s President Hassan Rouhani but at the entire establishment. Reports from inside Iran indicate more than 8,000 arrests so far; more than 50 have been killed, as many as 5 under torture. Security thugs have begun knocking down doors at night, to arrest “likely protesters” “as a precautionary measure.”

There are a number of persistent and harmful rumours surrounding the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (MEK) - mainly spread by the Iranian Regime’s propaganda machine, the Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS) - that are designed to make the international community and the Iranian people themselves distrust the MEK.

On November 9, 1978, the US Ambassador to Tehran, William Sullivan sent shock waves through the foreign policy establishment with a diplomatic cable to the White House titled, “Thinking the unthinkable. Iran without the Shah.” The Iranian monarchy had been a US ally for decades but in less than three months, the Shah and the monarchy were history.

A soon-to-be-released report from the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD) reveals that Iran has fired 23 missiles, at least 16 of them nuclear-capable missiles, since signing the controversial 2015 nuclear deal.

Maryam Rajavi is the leader of the combined Iranian Resistance forces, which fight for freedom and democracy in Iran. She is president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), a broad coalition of resistance groups, with has the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) as its largest member, which serves as the government in exile for Iran. Maryam Rajavi first  joined  the MEK in the early 1970s- not long after its founding- when they were fighting against the brutal regime of the Shah. Her family were also involved in the struggle against the Shah; her brother Mahmoud was also a member of the MEK and was held as a political prisoner during the Shah’s reign, while her sister Narges was tragically murdered by the Shah’s secret police (known as SAVAK) in 1975

Maryam Rajavi, the elected president of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, has criticized the European Union's silence and failure to respond to the brutal repression of the Iranian regime, which has led to mass detention of thousands of unarmed protesters and the torture of scores of demonstrators. Such a lack of response has reflected on Europe’s total disregard for its basic obligations toward humankind and its disrespect for the European Convention on Human Rights, she said during an official visit to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France.

As the world continues to debate the recent Iranian outburst of protests, its "lack of leadership" as they claim, and the road ahead, there is no doubt in the minds of senior Iranian regime officials over who led, and continues to lead, this latest uprising that continues to rattle the very pillars of the mullahs' rule.

Last Friday, based on a request made by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, the UN Security Council weighed in on the Iran protests. Enabling the voice of the Iranian people being heard in the Security Council is a strategic step forward for the nation’s uprising. It also provides a roadmap for the international community to find a practical and stable solution to the challenge posed by the rogue regime in Tehran.

Jan. 5 (UPI) --  More than one week has passed since the massive protests broke out in Iran. It started from the country's second-largest city with spontaneous demonstrations against poverty and government corruption, but spread across Iran with lightning speed.

GENEVA (5 January 2018) – Demands by protesters in Iran for freedom and adequate living standards must be addressed and their rights respected, UN human rights experts* have stated. Four Special Rapporteurs expressed extreme concern over the reported deaths of more than 20 people including children and hundreds of arrests across the country. “We are very disturbed by the way the authorities have responded to the protests,” the experts said a joint statement. “We share the worries expressed by Iranian civil society groups over what will happen to the people who have been arrested. “The names and whereabouts of all persons detained in connection with these protests ought to be made public and they should be allowed immediate access to their families and legal counsel. “The Government’s instruction to the Revolutionary Guards to hit hard against the protesters, and the judiciary’s threats of harsh punishment, are unacceptable. “We urge the authorities to exercise restraint a...
